The Treasure in Your Hand Continues

I wonder how often we take the Word of God for granted.

Do we read it hurriedly, barely giving thought to the contents because we’re focused on checking the box so that we can get to the next task on our ever-growing to-do list? When faced with new concepts and ideas we don’t understand, do we simply put them in a box and move on because we feel guilty or embarrassed that Scripture is so often mysterious?

What if instead of hurriedly trying to rush through a long passage, we spent time meditating on one or two verses each day, or maybe one or two verses a week treating it with reverence, acknowledging that each and every word is a gift from God not to be missed?

What would happen if we allowed ourselves to wrestle with the things we don’t fully understand? What if we took them to the Lord and asked Him to help us learn and discussed our confusion or frustration with fellow believers?

When we rush through the Scriptures or push aside things we don’t understand, we miss out on what God has for us because every time we open the Bible, we invite Him to teach us and work in our hearts and minds the way only He can. Scripture is the tool He uses to transform and prepare us so that we can fulfill the purpose He has for us here on earth.

The Bible is holy, not because of the pages or even the words; it is holy because the Holy God wrote it. And for that reason, it should be treated with reverence and respect.

Watching my kiddo and his friends make the same youthful mistakes teenagers have made for ages was a great reminder of how much I love God’s Word. And while the behavior could not go ignored, I’m happy it allowed God to remind me of just how marvelous a gift He gave us through His holy Scripture.

If you’ve lost your love for the Word of God, or maybe you never really had it to begin with, I encourage you to pray that God will reveal Himself to you through it today. Open the pages; read His thoughts; get to know Him. Ask Him to teach you, shape you, and prepare you. As those things take place, you will begin to understand what a tremendous treasure you hold in your hands, and you will fall more in love with the Author every day.

“I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;

before the gods I sing your praise;

I bow down toward your holy temple

and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,

for you have exalted above all things

your name and your word.”

Psalm 138 1-3 (ESV)

Holy God, thank you for the gift of Your Word! Please reveal Yourself to me through it today. Use it to make me the woman You created me to be, and help me to bring glory to Your name each day. Help me find time to linger, even if it’s only a few verses at a time, so I may truly begin to understand and marvel at the knowledge You have breathed into each page. I love You and Your thoughtfulness towards us! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
