Prince of Peace

Peace - an end to disputes, to wars, and to fear. Don’t we all yearn for peace and quiet? A quiet mind, a peaceful home or workplace, a sanctuary from the strife of the world – striving to make a living, striving to support and care for our families, striving for survival against disease.

Followers of Christ already have inner peace because they know that no matter what happens here on Earth, they will spend eternity in Heaven. We have no more fear of death, and even though we still know the disquiet of earthly troubles, we have an assurance of help from above to see us through our difficulties.

Here in Isaiah, "Prince of Peace" refers to a pervasive, eternal peace that Christ will bring to the Earth. Correlating scriptures in Isaiah 2:4 and Micah 4:3 say that Jesus will judge disputes between nations, and cause them to “beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks” (ESV). It will mean an end to discord and war. Everyone on Earth will live peacefully together with Jesus as their governor. Flawed human governments will be no more.

Isaiah 11:6-8 says even the animals will live in harmony with predator and prey side by side eating grass, and poisonous snakes will cause no harm. Verse 9 sums it up this way, “They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as water covers the sea” (ESV).

Imagine petting a bear or lion and being able to sit down in a field with those great creatures with no fear of harm. No one will steal or kill. All will be safe and secure – peaceful.

When this will happen is unknown to anyone except Father God, but Revelation 21:3,4 says God’s dwelling place will be with men and He will make all things new – no more pain, no more sadness, and no more death.

And it all begins with a baby, born in a manger, who becomes the salvation of the world.
